Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 System Transfer Guide: What Moves, What Doesn't, and What to Do First
Moving from Switch to Switch 2 is not just a sign-in step. This guide explains local vs server transfer, what gets deleted, what moves, and the exceptions that can catch a household off guard.
Evidence note
Evidence note: In this guide, Nintendo-stated facts are based on Nintendo's current transfer and setup support pages checked on August 14, 2026. PocketPlay workflow advice is limited to operational planning, such as when to stop, who to notify, and why local transfer is safer when both consoles are present. This guide does not claim hands-on testing, transfer timing data, or success-rate data.
Quick Answer
If you still have both consoles, use local communication transfer. If you will trade in, sell, or give away the old Switch before you can set up the Switch 2, use server transfer instead. Nintendo recommends local transfer when both systems are available, and recommends server transfer only when you will not have the old console later. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
The biggest warning is this: server transfer initializes the old Switch after upload and deletes all data on it. Local transfer is also not something to start casually on a shared console, because all users are included and Nintendo warns that save data on the source console is deleted after the transfer, even though the same support page separately describes a narrower cloud-save case. PocketPlay's safe advice is to assume the old console is not your fallback once you begin. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Pre-transfer warning
Warning: Do not start a Switch-to-Switch-2 system transfer until every user on the old console understands that the transfer includes all users on that system. If you choose server transfer, Nintendo says the old Switch is initialized after upload and all data on it is deleted. If you choose local transfer, Nintendo still warns that source-console save data is deleted at the end of the transfer, and some exceptions require separate handling. Treat the process as destructive for planning purposes, not as a casual sync. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Moving from an original Nintendo Switch family system to Nintendo Switch 2 is more serious than signing into a new console and redownloading a few games. Nintendo's official transfer system can move users, linked Nintendo Accounts, settings, friends, screenshots, and some save-related data, but it can also delete data from the old console, and it always affects every user on that source system. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]

Choose the right method before you start
Use local communication transfer if you still have both consoles
Nintendo says local communication transfer is the preferred method when you still have your old Switch and already have the Switch 2 in hand. Both systems need to be nearby, connected to the internet during setup, and the Switch 2 must still be in its initial setup flow when you start the transfer. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.] [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Use server transfer only if you will lose access to the old Switch
Nintendo recommends server transfer for situations like a trade-in, sale, or giveaway, where you will not have the old console by the time you set up the Switch 2. In that method, the old Switch uploads transfer data to Nintendo's server and is then initialized, which deletes all data on the source system. Nintendo stores that transfer data for up to one year or until the listed Download Deadline, whichever comes first. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Local vs server transfer decision table
| Decision point | Local communication transfer | Server transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | you still have both consoles and can set them up side by side | you are trading in, selling, or giving away the old Switch before you can complete Switch 2 setup |
| Nintendo's recommendation | preferred if you will still have the old Switch when you get the Switch 2 | use when you will not have access to the old Switch by the time you get the Switch 2 |
| Source-console effect | do not assume the old Switch remains a safe backup after completion; Nintendo's wording is mixed, so PocketPlay treats the process conservatively as destructive for planning | Nintendo says the source Switch is initialized after upload and all data on it is deleted |
| Biggest caution | all users on the source console are included | you must retrieve the transfer during Switch 2 initial setup, and Nintendo gives the upload a one-year deadline |
| Best reason to choose it | avoids uploading to the server and avoids the immediate factory-reset behavior of server transfer | lets you prepare the handoff before the new console is physically in front of you |
| Best reason not to choose it | bad fit if the old console will be gone before setup day | it is the more destructive option and should not be used casually |

PocketPlay workflow advice: choose local if both consoles are available.
What moves to Switch 2, and what does not
Nintendo says the following lists describe what does and does not transfer. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Nintendo says the following do transfer
- digital software ownership, with the actual software downloaded onto the Switch 2 after transfer and initial setup are complete
- all users, user settings, signed-in Nintendo Accounts, friends, play activity, and “users you have played with”
- screenshots and videos saved in system memory
- screenshots and videos saved on an old Switch microSD card, if prompted to insert that card temporarily during the process
- parental controls, Mii data, and several console-level settings such as HOME Menu icon order and software groups
Nintendo says the following do not transfer
- Bluetooth audio device settings
- custom controller button mappings
- time, time zone, region, and language settings, which you set manually during initial setup
The save-data part you should read twice
This is the most confusing part of Nintendo's documentation, so here is the conservative reading.
Nintendo says that during a local transfer, save data supported by Save Data Cloud Backup for users linked to a Nintendo Account remains on the old Switch and is copied to the Switch 2. The same page also says that save data for users without linked Nintendo Accounts and save data for games not supported by Save Data Cloud Backup will be deleted from the old Switch after transfer. But later on that same page, Nintendo also says that once the transfer is complete, all save data will be deleted from the source console. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
PocketPlay's guidance is to plan as if the source console is not your fallback after the transfer begins. If a save matters, do not rely on a hopeful reading of the old console still holding a usable copy.
Nintendo is clearer about one exception: software with a single shared save file between users, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, cannot be transferred through the standard system-transfer flow. That game has separate official instructions and tools depending on the case. What to do before you touch the transfer button
Preparation checklist
- Tell every user on the old Switch that the transfer includes all users on that console. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Decide whether you still have both consoles. If yes, stop and use local transfer. If no, and the old console is about to leave your hands, use server transfer. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Confirm your Nintendo Account sign-in works, because Nintendo requires an account for server transfer and uses the linked account during setup. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Check for special-save exceptions, especially Animal Crossing: New Horizons. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Keep the old Switch microSD card nearby if it contains screenshots or videos you want moved. Nintendo says you may be prompted to insert it temporarily during transfer. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- If you are also moving into new storage on Switch 2, read Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express Guide before setup. Old Switch microSD cards are not the same thing as Switch 2 game storage. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
The initial-setup rule matters more than most readers expect
Nintendo says Switch-to-Switch-2 system transfer is performed during initial Switch 2 setup. If you want to retrieve a server transfer after the Switch 2 setup was already completed, Nintendo says you will need to initialize the Switch 2 console and complete the initial setup again. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.] [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
That means the safe workflow is simple: decide first, transfer second, personalize the new console after. Do not fully set up the Switch 2 and assume you can casually pull the old system over later.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting server transfer just because it sounds more flexible. It is not the flexible option. It is the “I will not have the old console later” option. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Forgetting that all users are included. On a family console, that is the single easiest way to surprise someone with lost access or deleted local data. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Assuming digital games instantly appear ready to play. Nintendo says they download after transfer and initial setup are complete, and that requires internet access. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Treating Animal Crossing like an ordinary save. Nintendo does not. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- Completing Switch 2 setup first and only then thinking about a server transfer. Nintendo says that means initializing the Switch 2 and starting setup again if you need to retrieve that upload. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
What to do after the transfer
Once the transfer is finished and the Switch 2 restarts, finish the remaining setup steps. Nintendo's getting-started materials are the right next reference for console setup basics. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
- redownload the digital software you want installed first
- confirm each household user appears where expected
- check screenshots and videos if media history matters to you
- revisit system preferences with Nintendo Switch 2 — Settings & Optimization Guide
- if you need more storage for downloads, DLC, and updates, use Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express Guide
- if you still need the broader hardware context, see Nintendo Switch 2 review
FAQ
Should I use local or server transfer?
Use local transfer if you still have both consoles. Use server transfer only if you will not have the old Switch by the time you get the new one. That is Nintendo's own recommendation. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Does server transfer delete the old Switch?
Yes. Nintendo says the source Switch is initialized after upload, which deletes all data and resets it to factory settings. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Does local transfer keep my save data on the old Switch?
Nintendo's page is not clean enough to promise that safely. It separately describes a cloud-save-supported case, but it also warns that source-console save data is deleted once transfer is complete. PocketPlay's safe advice is not to rely on the old console as a fallback copy after transfer begins. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Do all users move together?
Yes. Nintendo says all users on the source console are included in the system transfer. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
What happens to my digital games?
Nintendo says your digital software is downloaded onto the target Switch 2 after the transfer and initial console setup are complete. Internet is required to download the software. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Can I do the transfer after I already finished setting up the Switch 2?
Nintendo says the system transfer is performed during initial setup. For a server transfer already uploaded to Nintendo's servers, Nintendo says you must initialize the Switch 2 and complete initial setup again in order to retrieve it. [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.] [Nintendo Support, verified August 14, 2026.]
Does Animal Crossing: New Horizons transfer normally?
No. Nintendo explicitly says software with a single shared save file between users, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, cannot be transferred through the standard system transfer and needs separate instructions.
